Project Overview

MGF supported the Mangrove Breakthrough to strengthen pathways for financing businesses and projects that contribute to mangrove protection, restoration, and sustainable use. Drawing on research, fieldwork, stakeholder consultations, workshops, and real-world financing examples, MGF developed practical Mangrove Finance Handbooks tailored to financial institutions, microfinance organizations, and project developers. The handbooks translate lessons from mangrove-positive lending and investment into accessible tools to help market actors identify opportunities, assess their viability, and mobilize debt finance for mangrove-positive activities. 

MGF is currently working with the Mangrove Breakthrough to build on this work by identifying a pipeline of bankable mangrove-positive investment opportunities across Mexico, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The work will culminate with investment facilitation and matchmaking to move from pipeline towards investment transactions. 

Our Work

• Market research and stakeholder engagement. Assessed mangrove finance opportunities in Colombia, Senegal, and the Philippines, engaging financial institutions, governments, and project developers to validate findings. 
• Guidance for financial institutions. Developed the How-To Guide for Mangrove-Positive Lending – Financial Institutions and How-To Guide for Mangrove-Positive Lending – Microfinance Institutions, translating financing approaches, risk considerations, and impact frameworks into practical guidance for mangrove-positive lending. Led a series a mangrove-positive finance webinars. 
• Guidance for project developers. Developed the How-To Guide for Mangrove-Positive Businesses to help mangrove-positive businesses understand financing pathways and strengthen their readiness for debt finance. 
• Case studies and market learning. Produced the Mangrove-Positive Lending Case Studies, documenting real-world financing examples and lessons that can inform mangrove-positive lending and investment. 
• Pipeline Identification. Developing a pipeline of mangrove-positive investment opportunities across Mexico, Indonesia, and the Philippines.  
• Investor Engagement and Investment Facilitation. Leading in-person investor dialogues across Mexico, Indonesia, and the Philippines to facilitate investment matchmaking between pipeline opportunities and financial institutions and impact investors.
